CESTC 2006 - Hikes

We suggest several hikes for the Monday afternoon free time between lunch and dinner (6 hours). For each hike we have assigned a CESTC participant who knows the way and can offer explanations regarding the visited places. Here are the hikes we recommend:

1. Dolina Koscieliska
Very easy, very scenic hike along a picturesque valley without a significant gain of altitude. 1 1/2 hour one way. 1/2 hour bus trip to the trail head.

2. Kopieniec Wielki
Easy hike to the peak providing the most beautiful view on the Polish Tatras. 340 m of vertical gain from the trail head. Return trip to the hotel through another scenic peak of Nosal involves a little bit of easy rock scrambling. Spectacular, high output spring on the way (Wywierzysko Olczyskie). 3 hours round trip according to the standard timing.

3. Gesia Szyja
Easy hike to the peak providing the most beautiful view on the Slovak Tatras (specially recommended to participants from Slovakia). About 500 m of altitude gain. Descent on the same path. Total hiking time about 3 hours. 30 min bus trip to the trail head.

4. Czarny Staw Gasienicowy.
Moderately difficult hike to the most beautiful lake in the Tatra Mountains. About 650 m altitude gain. 2 1/2 hour up the hill and 2 hour on return.

5. Kasprowy Wierch
Very strenuous hike to one of the best known peaks in Tatras, providing a spectacular view on both the High and Western Tatras as well as the Low Tatras on the other side of Liptov Valley. About 1000 m altitude gain. About 3 1/4 hours up the hill and 2 1/4 hours return. Only for very fit scientists!

6. Morskie Oko & Czarny Staw
Half a day trip to the largest, and according to some, the most beautiful lake in the Tatras with the spectacular view of the highest peaks in Poland. 50 minute bus trip, then 1 hour trip in a horse driven cart followed by 1/2 hour hike to Morskie Oko and another 40 min hike to Czarny Staw 175 m higher up the hill. The cost of the cart ride is 30 zl up the hill and 20 zl return trip. The cost of the bus 5 zl one way.
